Dr.s Paul Francel and David Coffman tell how they perform a 1½ hour pallidotomy/thalamotomy or a 2 hour DBS procedure. Dr.s Francel and Coffman from the Okla. University Health Sciences Center have published a new article on how they are using 3-D MRI and surgical planning to cut operating room time in half for patients receiving a pallidotomy/thalamotomy or DBS.

Neuropsychological consequences of chronic bilateral stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus in Parkinson's disease by Jean A. Saint-Cyr A recent study of 11 Parkinson's patients which had DBS suggests that significant declines were noted in working memory, speed of mental processing, bimanual motor speed and co-ordination, set switching, phonemic fluency, long-term consolidation of verbal material and the encoding of visuospatial material.

Surgical options for people with Parkinson's Disease by Dr. Michael Levesque This is a talk given at the Cedars-Sinai APDA Information & Referral Center grand opening in 1999 by Dr. Michael Levesque, a neurosurgeon who specializes in surgical procedures for people with movement disorders. Dr Levesque is doing research on harvesting and modifying a Parkinson's patient's stem cells which are trained in the laboratory to become neurons for re-implantation into the patient. One newspaper mistakenly called his research, "The Cure for Parkinson's Disease".

Demystifying the Neurological Exam for Parkinson's by Dr. Rick Stell Dr. Rick Stell at the Parkinson's Conference in Western Australia gave a detailed talk on what the various parts of the neurological examination mean, in the terms of diagnosing, or not diagnosing Parkinson's disease.
