ANTIPARKINSON:
Dopamine agonist
Description: Cabergoline is a long-acting dopamine agonist under investigation in Italy. Actions: agonism at dopamine receptors suppresses prolactin secretion, shrinks prolactinomas, and restores gonadal function.
Uses: undergoing review for treatment of hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea.
Distinguishing Features: requires only two doses per week compared with bromocriptine which must be dosed 2-3 times/day; cabergoline was found superior to bromocriptine in treatment of hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea and cabergoline caused less nausea.
Major Adverse Reactions: nausea/vomiting, headache, vertigo, dyspepsia.
Usual Adult Dose: doses of 0.5-1 mg PO twice weekly have been studied. Once weekly dosing has also been successful.
