'Virgin conception' lab to produce stem cells Process involves using an electrical spark to stimulate cell division in a donated human egg By Karen Birchard DUBLIN | The lab that made Dolly the sheep has notched up another first: a "virgin conception" or parthenogenesis resulting from a human egg that had been tricked into dividing. Dr. Paul De Souza announced at a Dublin conference that his team had produced six parthenotes from so-called virgin conceptions. The process involves using an electrical spark to stimulate cell division in a donated human egg. No genetic material was needed from human sperm. He said six parthenotes had developed to the stage where the team thought it might be possible "to mine" embryonic stem cells, regarded as the master cells that could be used for research leading to medical treatments. "At the moment we have not managed to get stem cells from these embryos but that continues to be our ambition," he told the session at the British Association's Festival of Science. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:listserv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
