The recently opened World Stem Cell Hub in Seoul is seeking test subjects 
suffering from Parkinsonâs disease and spinal chord paralysis. Sufferers who 
want to take part in research can apply from 9 a.m. on Nov. 1. 

The center, which is housed in Seoul National University Hospital and headed 
by cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk, said Monday applicants can download forms 
at the centerâs homepage (www.worldstemcellhub.org) or from the hospital 
(www.snuh.org) and submit them via e-mail or by post. 


The hub will pre-select candidates for closer examination based on the 
applications. The chosen test subjects will undergo simple surgery to extract 
skin tissue for somatic cell donations. 


âThe registration of patients is only the initial stage of the research to 
select optimal test subjects,â said Prof. Ahn Cu-rie, who is in charge of 
clinical tests at the center. âClinical tests or treatment canât begin with 
patient registration and somatic cell donations. Nor are subjects chosen on a 
first-come-first-serve basis.â 


The hub has been inundated with some 300 inquiries by phone and 30 e-mails a 
day from domestic and overseas patients since it opened on Nov. 19.
