Republican, pro-life governor Blunt supports SCNT but not using IVF embryos
because a sperm is involved. Opposition is strong in MO as evidenced by this
letter:
Cloning cells an unethical act
The stem-cell research proponents are spending megabucks to get this
constitutional amendment passed in the state of Missouri.
I think that one of the goals is for these research organizations and
scientists to get their hands on public money. Look at the money being spent on
prime-time TV ads already.
The ethical part of this proposal is the more serious. The proponents first
tried to mislead us with technical language, somatic cell nuclear transfer
(SCNT for short) which is the same technique as used for cloning life. This
procedure was used to clone Dolly the sheep.
The proponents would have us believe that this is not a living human being
because it wasn't fertilized with a live human sperm, but the bottom-line truth
here is that it takes a living embryo to produce the stem cells.
