Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Research Program (NETRP) DoD Sponsored Parkinson's Related Research The Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Research Program (NETRP) is a dual use program-an improved understanding of the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases creates a basis for preventive measures against the risks of military operational hazards and military threat agents that will also generate advances in treatment interventions for Parkinson's. Research for Parkinson's Disease Patients PD is a progressive, degenerative neurological condition affecting the central and autonomic nervous system. The most obvious effects are seen in control of motor function and functional alteration in multiple organ systems. Disease initiation and progression appears to be the result of both environmental and genetic factors through, as yet, unknown mechanisms. Research imperatives: identify risk factors. define mechanisms of disease progression. characterize disease progression Disease symptoms and mechanisms of disease progression are studied to identify interventions and treatments that: slow or halt disease progression, prevent failed compensation, and restore function. Research Outcomes for MOMRP The Military Operational Medicine Research Program (MOMRP) mission is to sustain and enhance warfighter performance and health. Risks to warfighter health and performance are common in military environments. Among these are physical and material hazards such as: traumatic injury, radiation, fatiguing conditions, climatic extremes, chemical exposures, war agents, and disease agents. These hazards may be intensified by or modulate metabolic, cognitive and psychological processes increasing the possibility of harm to the warfighter. MOMRP seeks to identify, remove or minimize the effects of these operational hazards.
