Health Reform: A Look at the Cures Acceleration Network=20

Today, March 23, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and =
Affordable Care Act into law. One provision in this large health care =
reform bill that has received little attention outside of Washington, =
but is very important to the Parkinson's community and therapy =
development, is the creation of the Cures Acceleration Network (CAN) at =
the National Institutes of Health (NIH). =20

Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA), Co-Chair of the Bicameral =
Congressional Caucus on Parkinson's Disease, introduced the CAN Act of =
2009 as an amendment to the Senate health care bill. The CAN Act seeks =
to cut the time between discovery and development of drugs and therapies =
through new grant-making mechanisms at the NIH. It will establish CAN =
within the Office of the Director of NIH and authorize grants expected =
to more quickly move discoveries from the lab into the next generation =
of therapies. In addition, CAN will help coordinate the efforts of all =
stakeholders in the drug development process in order to help move =
discoveries forward. =20

For several years, PAN has been the leading advocacy voice in the =
disease community calling for the federal government to do more to =
bridge the scientific "Valley of Death," a term used to describe the =
point in the drug development pipeline where many discoveries languish. =
PAN is excited that a commitment has been made to medical innovation and =
that a new approach will be tried to more quickly move new treatments =
and therapies into the hands of those who need them most. =20

We look forward to working with the NIH to ensure CAN will do all =
that it can to move promising science forward for those living with =
Parkinson's and many other diseases. Please stay tuned as the NIH =
begins its work to establish the Cures Acceleration Network. =20
