  Subject: Cord Blood Claims Untrue

  Dear Editor:

In "Valley stem-cell lab" article of 3-28-10 by Parker Leavitt, =
Frances Verter claims that cord blood stem cells are now being used in =
clinical trials to treat cerebral palsy and could be used to treat =
Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, MS and strokes.

Like most of the claims of opponents of embryonic stem cell research =
this is a gross exaggeration, if not outright falsehood. There are no =
cord blood treatments for any of these diseases. On February 10, 2010 =
the FDA approved the first clinical trial of children's own cord blood =
cells for cerebral palsy. Claiming "treatment" is a bit premature as =
trial does not equal treatment.

I follow the stem cell research issue closely and have never heard of =
reputable scientists suggesting cord blood might be used treatments for =
Parkinson's, let alone Alzheimer's disease. There are more promising =
research alternatives.

While the Celebration Stem Cell Centre may someday yield benefits, it =
is wrong too suggest that it puts Arizona on the "cutting edge" of stem =
cell research. Arizona continues to be an educational and scientific =
backwater.
